In the England Hockey League (EHL) Men's Premier Division, East Grinstead have started where they left off last season, sitting atop the table thanks to wins over Cannock and Brooklands MU while in the Women's Premier Division Reading, new to the top division this year, are already showing they will be a force to be reckoned having recorded victories over neighbours Slough and Birmingham University. Following the start of the EHL season, the European Cup Trophy Tour has made its first stops at Reading and East Grinstead in recent weeks and will be at Surbiton this coming Saturday and Cannock the following week. Why not pop along to see the trophy and have your pictures taken with it? The start of the new season will see many hockey players, coaches, umpires and spectators getting a grip on the new rules of the game which include the 'self pass' rule and the rule on free hits inside the 23 metre area. With this in mind we thought it would be helpful to signpost anyone interested towards the electronic copy of the Rules of Hockey 2009 which can be found in the Officiating section of the England Hockey website (www.englandhockey.co.uk/officiating). Also in that section, visitors will find recently published guidance for umpires implementing the new rules. As we have approached the season, England Hockey has also received a number of enquiries regarding pitch markings sparked in part by the new rules. As a result, a statement was released on the England Hockey website and can be found in the Facilities section at www.englandhockey.co.uk/facilities. Talking of facilities, keep an eye on the website this coming Monday (5 October) for the launch of the forthcoming Capital Investment Programme. Next year's Samsung Hockey Champions Trophy in Nottingham is approaching and the volunteer recruitment drive is well and truly underway now. The organising committee is looking for around 250 dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to join the Champion Crew and help make the tournament a roaring success.
